Peter: Well, I made one of the biggest mistakes ever to begin with. Thats an interesting question. Peter: Married. Peter Feigin: They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. Do we want this guy to keep playing? Off the court it is best practice. My wifes born in El Salvador came here when she was 9 to Brooklyn. John: You talked about your Masters of the Universe being your partners and owners and really some of the brightest people on this planet which of course, thats true. Were one of those cities that it was just so powerful. Just so I get a little. Here's my conversation with Peter Feigin. Its like, hey, I worry about the execution. Even though you're at the World of Disney, even Disney after about 10 days, you're ready to get out of Disney no matter where you are. We hired an unbelievable CFO. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Peter: administration, in aviation, in a $3 billion international aviation company, which was just amazing. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. But yet, still being leaders with more than a vote movement, just amazing, amazing. "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. Its hundreds of rings. It looks amazing. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. I know youve said your pops passed. He really taught me the lesson late in life is the real geniuses or the ones who can take these complex things and talk to me about them and I understand them. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. If Im 25 and struggling to get up and down the court because I was out with my friends, and these guys who are running companies are showing up and playing ball, then I have no excuse. The facilities part was easy. They called themselves The Magic Three as middle school teammates on the Upper East Side. How can we do fun special things, what matters to people? Peter Feigin: No. Not like how to just excel in basketball. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. How can we help each other and learn from each other? John: Thats literally a reality show that, it could be on Netflix. This is a small town, even though it's a big city. Everybody knows everybody. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? Were going to pay you, but hey, youre going to work. You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. And this is how cities evolve. Youre going to actually have to be a decent person and not be toxic. Peter Feigin: So, we saw this as the opportunity of, "Oh my goodness. John: Its so amazing you say that. Peter: But one of the incredible things, alignment we have with myself, John Horst, whos our GM and coach Bud is like, weve got this undercurrent of constant improvement and kind of like never, pleased but never satisfied. Peter: John, the best. Peter: Start from, yeah, start from the beginning. That was, Peter: That was it. Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". But usually, The Run comprises a core group of 15 to 20 players who range from 16 to 58 years old. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? We've made it really authentic and localized with what our food and beverage offerings are going to be. Peter: Yeah. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. I think probably one of the last public-private partnerships that thatll happen, when Troy brought together the city, the county and the state to put together a partnership for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. I talk about it all the time with my wife, with my brother, with everything. "He plays with the Bucks 95 percent of the time. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. John: Another native New Yorker from Roslyn, New York. If youre not playing defense, theyre going to call you out, said Woodhouse, who would temper his Friday night activities in anticipation of The Run. It all matters what state youre in and whats going on with the legislation. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? Peter Feigin: Just, just listen, just listen. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. Proud of him and all the success. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. Peter: We knew each other. How do we attack every day with how can we resource everybody who works here to be able to do their job very well. So, the end of the story is I was responsible to hire CEO, so I got two or three candidates I knew Mark and Wes would hate and they couldn't hire them because they didn't like something about them. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. Do you want to like, figure out what the handles are and become aThere are lots of opportunities in that realm, which I think are immediate. "Of course, you have Greece, but Asia is mesmerized by Giannis. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? Make this the best operation, the best facilities and the best place to be, because we're going to go compete with everybody to win a championship. I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced. Are they all going to be important or do you see one heavier leaning heavier than other, in terms of future revenue opportunities that are credible and consistent? Above me there are my two children, my son, Tyler, my daughter, Courtney. My favorite part of coming to Milwaukee is going into your stash of gear and getting the hoodies and the gear. Peter: Yeah. I think one of the things Jason of Beverly Hills, who was the designer and the manufacturer did, we just had this awesome element that the top of the ring came off and became a pendant on your, that you could actually wear as a necklace. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. But no matter how skilled the player, new members are included on a probationary basis. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. Peter Feigin: I think we have a good structure with Jon Horst, who's really our GM and kind of really runs the basketball day-to-day. And that's before you're worried about what a health scare is. Well, you know about the ice cream truck. Peter Feigin: Well, Mr. Red, it's kind of for naught, I'd do anything for you, so this is an easy period of time. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.".
